DE N4YXW in Warrenton. I run a jnos board on 145.730 and 145.070 and saw your message dated 1/17/12 regarding bulletins. What is the best path to get to you? Also wouldn't mind to try to experiment with telnet forwarding. I have Hughes net so I would have to connect to you. but over the air fowarding would be fine to. Are you off the tide node? My path is :
FBBS9 ->Kr4PK-2->cara->tide

The recent TWC incident should have been a wake up call. Their entire network failed and was down for quite a while. This covered a large geographic area and was not due to anything they did or any kind of disaster but rather it was caused by Juniper routers doing something funky. That little glitch that affected a single company had ramifications that spread globally.

There are other examples of these kinds of failures like the city in California that was taken "offline" by the someone cutting a fiber line in an unprotected manhole.

We can't control the Internet and that leaves us vulnerable.

Having multiple paths is good but if you don't exercise them regularly (daily) you won't know if they are down or not until you need them.

I think sometimes we overdo the concern about using the Internet. Here most of the DECs are rabid in their rejection of anything Internet. But it is a useful tool, and one we should know how to exploit. And although local Internet connections can be unreliable, wider Internet connections are startlingly solid.

One of our strategies for many of our Internet connected nodes is to have alternate RF paths to other "feet in the Internet". Our local hamgate, for example, has several scripts so that any of a half-dozen folks can simply run a script and the Internet connection is through another entry point, with another provider, and subject to different risks. One of our alternatives recently went offline, so we are down to two, but we are working on making sure there are three other ways to the net in addition to our normal connection.

But it does take effort to be sure we know how to operate without it. Perhaps four out of five of our statewide exercises involve no Internet use at all. Even operating netless a few times a year, people learn to be sure their alternatives are robust. It does take practice, and it does take leadership assuring that people are reminded frequently.
